Donald K. Wise

Donald K. Wise has received his crown of glory and now lives forever in the arms of his creator and redeemer. Don was called home to God's heavenly kingdom on Sunday, August 27, 2023. He was 85 years old. Don was born on October 7, 1937, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Stewart Wise, a grocer, and Ruby Edith (Lee) Wise, a businesswoman and homemaker. When Don was eight, his family moved from Indianapolis to Martinsville, Indiana, where his father purchased a grocery store that he later called Wise's Superette. Don was a 1955 graduate of Martinsville High School, where he was a member of the drama club and served as the editor of his senior class yearbook. Don attended Indiana University, graduating in 1960 with a BS in Business. He was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, a source of many lifelong friends. After college, he served in the Air Force Reserves while working at his family's grocery store. In 1962, Don married Barbara Ann Mohlke of Valparaiso, Indiana, whom he met during his IU days. The two of them made a permanent home in Bloomington, where they raised three children. They celebrated 61 years of marriage. Starting in the late 1960s, Don had a successful retail career, managing Tower's Menswear in Bloomington before purchasing the store with his business partner, Philip Wible. The two owned and operated Wible and Wise clothing store in the College Mall, the Oxford Shop on Kirkwood Avenue, and additional Oxford Shop stores in Indianapolis and Lafayette with a third partner, Dick Michael. In 1984, they closed the Bloomington stores, and Don became a real estate broker, an occupation he greatly enjoyed until his retirement in 2016. He worked for Century 21 All Seasons Realtors, Sabbagh Pickens, and Berkshire Hathaway. Don was active in his community and church. He was a member of the Bloomington Rotary Club for many years, was president of the College Mall Merchants Association, and served as a member of the City of Bloomington Board of Zoning Appeals for over 10 years. He was an early member of Evangelical Community Church and a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church in his later years. Don was a lifelong, enthusiastic supporter of Indiana University athletics. He also enjoyed working with computers. Don is survived by his wife, Barbara; sister Nancy Oldham; daughter Angela (Ben) Miller; sons Kevin (Stephanie) Wise and Corey (Laura) Wise; and four grandchildren: Ella, Samuel and Elijah Miller, and Caroline Wise. Don was preceded in death by his parents, his brother-in-law Charles Oldham, and his sister-in-law Mary Mohlke. Don was a lifelong child of God, and his faith has always been a reminder of the hope of everlasting life through his savior, Jesus Christ, with whom his rest is now complete. Funeral arrangements will. be held Saturday September 9, 2023 at 3:30PM at the Sherwood Oaks Christian Church Chapel, 2700 East Rogers, Bloomington, Indiana. Visitation will also be held Saturday, September 9, 2023 from 2:00PM until the time of the service at 3:30PM at the church.
