Jay Hammer Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.--Dr. J.W. Hammer Jr. died June 29 at his cottage at Bell Trace. He was 85 years old. Surviving is his widow, Jean Koehler Hammer. They were married June 2, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pa. Also surviving are his children: Jayne Hammer Spencer of Bloomington; William Bruce Hammer of Winona Lake; and the Rev. Stephen Jay Hammer of Tempe, Ariz. Also surviving are seven grandchildren: Emily Winters Spencer of Washington, D.C.; Patrick Spencer of San Francisco, Calif.; Gretchen Hammer Gardetto, Maricopa, Ariz., and Philip Hammer of Tempe, Ariz.; J.W. Hammer III of Columbus, Ind., Russell Hammer of Warsaw, Ind., and Macy Hammer of Winona Lake. He was born to Dr. and Mrs. J.W. Hammer Sr. on Sept. 29, 1923, and grew up in Middletown, in Henry County, where he opened a family medical practice in 1949 that continued through the early 1960s. Later, he held a residency at the Department of Radiology at the IU School of Medicine and, upon completion, joined the physicians at the Southern Indiana Radiological Association in 1965, where he practiced until his retirement 1983. He was an alumnus of both Indiana University and the Temple University School of Medicine. During the Korean War, he volunteered to serve in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was a first lieutenant stationed at the foot of Mount Kilamanjaro, Japan. He was a member of the Monroe County Medical Society; the American Medical Association; the American College of Radiology; Beta Eta chapter of Sigma Nu Fraternity, the Indiana University Presidents Circle; the J.O. Ritchey Society, IU School of Medicine; the Russell Cromwell Society of Temple University; and the 1827 Society of Hanover College. He also was a supporter of the Christian Sarkine Autism Treatment Center at the IU School of Medicine. Allen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements; there will be no funeral service.
