Velma Crews Hartsock

A full and joyful life on this earth has ended for Velma Crews Hartsock who passed gently on July 14, 2020. Just two months short of her 97th birthday, Velma was actively engaged in life right to the end. Endowed with intelligence, quick-wit and an infectious laugh, she was a continual source of inspiration as she faced challenges and embraced life with a positive, energetic attitude. Determined to live alone after the death of her husband, she proved that she was as capable as ever of taking care of herself. She kept an immaculate house, tended her lovely gardens, and entertained herself with crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, computer games, reading good books, trying new recipes, and even a bit of TV. Her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her are saddened by her passing but celebrate that we are richer for having had her in our lives. Born the youngest in a family of eight, she was a proud native of Bloomington. Velma is survived by her loyal and loving sister, Maxine Crews Pontius. The beautiful, fun-loving Velma Crews won the heart of Maurice (Bud) Hartsock when she was only 14 years of age. A few years later they were married and spent 77 wonderful years together, parenting two devoted children: Jerry and Terri. They doted on their four wonderful granddaughters and six great-grandchildren. Their lives were also blessed with wonderful nieces and nephews. Velma's greatest joy was connecting with friends and family, and she was a loyal member of Bridge Church of Christ in Unionville. All who knew her were aware of her love of holidays, especially Christmas. Each year every room in her home was transformed into a Christmas Wonderland, and she delighted in every expression of “joy to the world” that Christmas symbolizes. Velma Crews Hartsock was a wonderful woman! She was dearly loved and will be deeply missed. We hold her in our hearts and wish her God-speed. Donations in her honor may be made to Bridge Church of Christ, 6996 N Tunnel Road, Unionville, IN 47468. A graveside service will be held at 11am on Monday, July 20, 2020 at Little Union Cemetery. Allen Funeral Home and Crematory, 4155 S. Old State Road 37, Bloomington have been entrusted with arrangements.
