Barney Runyon

Herbert "Barney" D. Runyon, 73, of Bloomington passed away Saturday, July 16, 2022 surrounded by his loving family. Barney was everyone’s favorite mechanic will be remembered for his contagious smile, kindness, willingness to help others, hunting skills, golf swing, dance moves and his stubbornness. He touched so many lives as a wrestling coach and a mentor to many more. Born August 9, 1948 in Bloomington, Indiana, he was the son of Jim Runyon and Jewel (Payton) Moss. Barney graduated from Smithville High School in May of 1967. In 1967 he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served as a Tank Commander in the 8th Infantry Division and proudly fought for our country, achieving the Rank of Staff Sergeant. Barney married his high school sweetheart, Kathy in October of that same year. He was a loving husband, dad, papaw, brother and son, he enjoyed hunting and being with his family. Barney was an avid hunter, spending long weekends at the bus with all his buddies and their wives. Hiking the hills of Brown County hunting the big one. We will never forget that 15 point buck. He loved the month-long trips out to Idaho hiking all over the mountains calling in those big elk. He enjoyed getting together with friends and family at the annual July celebration dancing and singing. Barney is survived by his wife, Kathy his three children, Michelle Runyon Shipley, Mike Runyon (Tina) and Scott Runyon, eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two brothers, Stephen Runyon (Dorothy) and Stephen Moss (Chelsea), four sisters, Shelia Strain (David), Vanessa Roberts, Brenda Runyon and Paula Moss, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, step-mother, two sisters and two brothers. Services will be 6:00pm Thursday, July 21, 2022 at the Allen Funeral Home and Crematory, 4155 South Old State Road 37 in Bloomington. Pastor Joe Nelson will preside, and the Monroe County Veteran’s Honor Guard will perform military rites. Visitation will 1-6pm at the funeral home. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Allen Funeral Home and Crematory in memory of Barney.
