Dr. Charles W. McClary

Dr. Charles W. McClary, a dedicated family practice physician and esteemed member of the Bloomington community, passed away on November 26, 2023 at the age of 87. Born in Evansville, Indiana on April 5, 1936, Dr. McClary's life was marked by a remarkable dedication to healthcare, community service, and family. Dr. McClary graduated from Bosse High School in Evansville, IN in 1952. He played basketball and tennis all four years. Dr. McClary began his journey at Vanderbilt University, where he cultivated his passion for medicine. He became an active member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, forging lasting friendships and bonds. Eager to further his education, he pursued his medical degree at Indiana University School of Medicine, where he honed his skills and knowledge. Following his medical studies, Dr. McClary completed his internship at Marion County General Hospital, solidifying his commitment to serving others. Immediately following he was drafted into the Navy as a physician for a fleet in the Pacific and at the Great Lakes Navel Training Center. He then embarked on a remarkable 40+-year career as a family practice doctor in Bloomington, touching the lives of countless patients with his compassionate and expert care. During his tenure at Bloomington Hospital, Dr. McClary held pivotal roles as Chief of Staff and Chief of Family Practice, showcasing his exceptional leadership and dedication to the medical community. He was also recognized as a Diplomate for the American Board of Family Physicians, reflecting his commitment to upholding the highest standards of medical practice. Beyond his medical profession, Dr. McClary was deeply involved in the Bloomington community. He served on the boards of both Bloomington Hospital and Bloomington Convalescent Center, exemplifying his dedication to improving healthcare facilities and services. Additionally, he served as President of the Monroe-Owen Medical Society, leaving an indelible mark on the local medical community. Dr. McClary's community involvement extended beyond healthcare. He was a former member of Kiwanis, and his dedication to charitable causes was further evidenced by his years of delivering Meals on Wheels during his retirement. An accomplished athlete, Dr. McClary achieved the title of National Senior Games short-time trial cycling champion in 1993, showcasing his resilience and determination. Amidst his many accomplishments, Dr. McClary held dear his family and faith. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife of 65 years, Judy McClary, and a loving father to his sons Charles (Linda), Colin (Amy), John (Brittany), and daughter Erin Curts (Jay). His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren - Charles L (Jordan), Scott (Corin), Sam (Libby), Henry, Addison, Avery, Evan, and AJ - as well as his great-grandchildren Natalie and Bobby with two more on the way. Dr. McClary was the son of Charles F. and Clara Werner McClary and the brother of Robert E. McClary (Pattye). Dr. McClary was a proud and long-standing member of the 7:30am “Coffee Boys” group where they passed valuable information and solved many of the problems of the day. In lieu of flowers and to honor him, contributions can be made to a charity of your choice, reflecting Dr. McClary's legacy of service and commitment to making Bloomington a better place. Dr. Charles W. McClary's impact on the medical field, the community, and his family will forever resonate, leaving a void that will be deeply felt but always honored and celebrated. Funeral services for Dr. McClary will be held at 1:00PM on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory 4155 South Old State Road 37. A private family burial service will follow. Visitation will also be held Saturday at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory from 11:00AM until the time of the service at 1:00PM.
