Dolores "Shady" McDonald

Dolores “Shady” McDonald (Wilson) was born to Grace Tillman Wilson and Harrison W. Wilson on March 12, 1932 in Neoga, Illinois. Shady is survived by her husband, of 30 years Jim McDonald, her son Jeff Schreck, his wife Dee and two step sons, Hunter and Cameron Battenfield. In addition, she also leaves three step children, Kate and husband John Douglas, Doug, and Bill and, wife Stacy, and grandson Graham who loved and adored her. Also, her Sister-in law Raisa Wilson survives. Shady also leaves behind a number of cherished nieces and nephews in Illinois, Kentucky, and Texas. Shady was preceded in death by her parents, her three brothers, Morris, Doris, and Robert. Shady McDonald was a 1950 graduate of Neoga High School in Illinois where she excelled academically and athletically. After high school, she was admitted to Eastern Illinois University, where she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in education, as well as letter in basketball, softball and volleyball. A few years later, she received a master’s degree in Health, Physical Education and Recreation from Indiana University. For over twenty years, she taught Health, Physical Education and Drivers Education at a number of schools in the Mid-West and overseas. In 1973, after living abroad in India and Afghanistan, Shady returned with her then husband, Tom and son, Jeff to Bloomington, Indiana where she began her 39-year real estate career at Jimmy Owens Realty. After Owens’ merger with Bryan & Reed, Shady sold real estate for Owens, Bryan & Reed until 1989 when she joined F.C. Tucker/Bloomington. Shady served as F.C. Tucker’s Sales Manager until 2000, when she handed over her management responsibilities to devote more time to her clients and husband, Jim. Until her retirement in 2012, Shady served the REALTOR communities in a variety of capacities, including a tenure as President of the Bloomington Board of REALTORS and as 6th District Vice President for the Indiana Association of REALTORS, as well as contributing to many a committee and project along the way. Shady also taught Real Estate brokerage for several years for the Real Estate Certification Program. Throughout her life, Shady was socially active and lent her time and talents to numerous and varied organizations in the Bloomington area to include: being an active member and advisor of The Alpha Chapter of Kappa, Kappa, Kappa; a member of ALTRUSA; President of the IU Women’s Faculty Association; and, as a breast cancer survivor herself, a strong advocate and supporter of breast cancer research. Shady was also an avid sports enthusiast. An IU basketball and football season ticket holder since 1957, she could often be spotted cheering on the Cream and Crimson with her fellow IU sports fans. golfing, tennis, and swimming, were all sports Shady enjoyed. Post-retirement, Shady rediscovered her love of travel with her husband, Jim. Together, they traveled within the United States and to such countries as England, Scotland, France, Korea, Japan and China sampling the local cuisine, visiting the historical and iconic, and getting back together with family. When not traveling, Shady and Jim enjoyed taking their boat onto Lake Monroe. Shady showed tenacity, bravery and her special sense humor up until the very end. She died knowing she was so very loved by all who ever knew her. Once described as “a whole lot of special in a tiny package” Shady was a ray of sunshine in all of our lives. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and her extended REALTOR family. The family would also like to extend a big thank-you to the amazing staff of Brown County Health and living community for their genuine care and concern shown for her while she was a resident. Shady will also be remembered as a master gardener, a wonderful cook whose mastery of international cuisine was exceptional. Shady also loved antiquing, estate sales and spending Saturday mornings at the Bloomington Farmers Market. A brief ceremony to celebrate Shady's life will be held at 1:15 p.m. at University Club - Presidents’ Room, Indiana Memorial Union, 900 East 7th Street, Bloomington, IN 47405 on Saturday, April 7th, 2018. Immediately following all are welcome to gather from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The family requests that any donations be made to the Bloomington Humane Society and Riley’s Children Hospital.
