Doris Patricia Brineman

Doris Patricia (Lare) Brineman peacefully passed away in her home at Meadowood Retirement Community on November 4, 2021. Born March 31, 1926 in Ft. Wayne Indiana, she was the oldest child of John L and Patricia M (Collins) Lare. She is survived by her three daughters Barbara Council, Martha Taylor (Dan), and Joan Breeden (Richard); 10 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Don, parents, brother (Walter Robert), and one great-grandson. In the fall of 1944, Doris moved to Bloomington to attend the Indiana University School of Journalism where she earned her degree. While there she met the love of her life, Don, whom she married in 1947. They decided to make Bloomington their home. Throughout their adult lives, they gave their time and support to make Bloomington a beautiful and welcoming community in which to live. After her graduation from IU, Doris joined the Local Council of Women. She was asked to write press releases to help raise funds for the Bloomington Hospital. This earned her the privilege of serving on the founding board of the Hospital Foundation. It also led to her position as the first Public Relations Director for the Bloomington Hospital, a position she held for 21 years. Following her retirement she continued to volunteer at the hospital for the next 35 years. She also continued her career in journalism by working part time for the IU News Bureau as a copy editor, mentoring journalism students for 12 years. After moving into Meadowood she shared her writing and editing skills with the Anthology group. Doris was an active member of the First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ for more than 70 years supporting both the church itself and church activities which served the community, including: the Interfaith Winter Shelter, Habitat for Humanity, and front desk receptionist. Doris volunteered with the Meals on Wheels, Bloomington Thrift Shop, and many other organizations. In addition to serving on the Hospital Foundation Board, she also served on the Boards of Directors for the Bloomington Park and Recreation Department Foundation, and Indiana University Retirees Association. Doris enjoyed playing bridge with friends in Blue Ridge and Meadowood as well as reading, and entertaining. She also loved a quiet evening with friends and family and a glass of wine. Her pleasant personality was contagious to everyone she met. Doris loved living at Meadowood Retirement Community. The family would like to thank Meadowood for providing her with an active living and social environment with the independence and privacy she desired. Both visitation and Celebration of Life will take place at First Christian Church, Disciples of Christ (corner of Kirkwood and Washington). Family will receive friends Thursday November 11 from 4 – 6 p.m. A Celebration of Doris’ Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday November 13. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Christian Church or Monroe County United Ministries (MCUM).
