Dorothy "Dotti" Greene Riggins

Dotti Riggins has entered new life following a long and well-lived life in this world. She superbly played the roles of daughter, sister, wife, mother, friend, employee, volunteer, child of God. Born into a blue collar family in suburban St. Louis, she played all the sports and sang in school and church choirs. She met her future husband, Pat Riggins, during a Christmas caroling outing. The two would be married for over fifty-four years, raising four sons and blessing churches and communities wherever they lived. Dotti graduated from a secretary prep school, winning an award for the best telephone voice. She supported Pat in the early years, while he served in the Army and attended veterinary school. She stayed home to raise their sons, then resumed working as office manager for his veterinary hospital and at the IU Journal for American History. Upon retirement she and Pat became so involved in causes they won the City of Bloomington/United Way of Monroe County Be More Award for Volunteers of the Year. Dotti received ordination as both an elder and a deacon in the Presbyterian Church. She sang in choirs and served on committees. She took the organization of the “Old Kitchen” at 1st Presbyterian of Bloomington especially seriously. Dotti and Pat sponsored Rotary Scholars from Korea, Scotland and elsewhere. The dinners she served for those students, and for family holidays, were legendary. She never missed her sons' games, concerts and academic awards programs. Dotti's parents and siblings all died before she did, as did her beloved, Pat. She is survived by sons Mike (Linda), Tim (Claire), Dennis (Katie) and Matt (Lori). She left behind grandchildren Laura Riggins Muse, Molly Russell, Dan Hall Riggins, Alice Riggins, Connor Riggins and Lanie Riggins. She is also survived by great-grandchildren Theo and Rory Muse, Matilda and Rafe Russell, and Ayla Hall Riggins, whom Dotti met just days before her death. Should any wish to give in honor of Dotti, please consider the Monroe County Humane Association. Visitation will take place from 4-8pm Friday, August 25 at Allen Funeral Home, 4155 S. Old St. Rd. 37. Her funeral will take place at 11:00am on Saturday, August 26 at the 1st Presbyterian Church on 6th St. in Bloomington. A reception and committal service will follow.
