Edith Shirley Kuhn

Edith Shirley Kuhn, born Edith Shirley Peacock, passed away peacefully Monday afternoon, December 20, 2009, in her son’s home in Bloomington, IN, at the age of 89. She was born May 12, 1920, in Lafayette, IN, to Faye Hammitt Peacock and Alva Morse Peacock. From the age of six, she spent her childhood in the Soldiers and Sailors Home for children of American veterans, in Knightstown, IN, along with her four younger siblings, Georgia Jean, Dora Faye, Donald Morse, and Roberta Elanor. Married to Walter Lee Kuhn in 1941, they raised their children in Indianapolis, IN, where Shirley worked as a beautician and in the Kroger Wholesale Bakery until she retired. She was a born again Christian and a member of the Lifegate Baptist Church in Indianapolis. Shirley moved to Bloomington, IN in 2000, where she resided in Redbud Hills Senior Retirement Center until August of 2009. Shirley was a devoted sister and daughter, reuniting with her siblings and mother in her adulthood. Her first priority was always her family, including her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She cared for others, including her mother and in-laws in their old age, without any expectation that she would be cared for in return. Shirley was generous and unassuming, open to whatever life would bring, and able to make the best of whatever it had to offer. She had a delightful sense of humor, was an avid reader, loved to laugh, and put her trust in God to care for her all her days. Regardless of the hardships she experienced in life, she always considered herself to be fortunate, an inspiration to all who loved her. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Walter Kuhn; her siblings, Georgia Cox, Donald Peacock, and Roberta Howe; and her daughter-in-law, Dorothy Linville Kuhn. Shirley is survived by her sister, Dorothy (Dora Faye) Daugherty; her children, Sandra Lee Glover and her husband David Glover of Indianapolis, John Wesley Kuhn and his wife Kloy Kuhn of Westerville, OH, Joseph Allen Kuhn of Bloomington, IN, and Thomas Mark Kuhn and his wife Melissa Keller of Bloomington, IN; grandchildren, Julie Thompson, Gary Glover, Lorrie Preston, Jennifer Evans, Benjamin Keller-Kuhn, and Alison Keller-Kuhn; great grandchildren, Zachary Evans, Kyle Evans, Alexandria Preston, and Sophia Preston. Friends may call at Allen Funeral Home Saturday, December 26th, from 10:00 to noon, followed by a memorial service at noon. Burial is to follow at Fillmore Cemetery in Fillmore, IN. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Monroe County Public Library Bookmobile are requested.
