Elizabeth Canada

Elizabeth Canada passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Sterling House in Bloomington. She was born in Port Huron, Michigan, on August 10, 1913, to Elva (Selkirk) Wilcox and Milan Theodore Wilcox. Elizabeth was known to her friends as Betty. She had been a continuous Bloomington resident since 1946. She held a bachelor's degree in music from Northwestern University and a master's degree from Indiana University. Elizabeth was widowed suddenly in 1952 when her first husband, Adolph Weiser, a member of the piano faculty in the IU School of Music, died leaving her with four children. She then established a career as a film librarian with the Indiana University Audio-Visual Center and became active in the alumni organization of Alpha Gamma Delta. She later married Edwin McPheron and was widowed once again upon Prof McPheron's death. In retirement, Elizabeth became an enthusiastic golfer and was a regular at the IU course. She was a lover of classical music, jazz, and was a competent pianist. She enjoyed travel as well as her bridge and book groups. She served on the Altar Guild of Trinity Episcopal Church, and volunteered with Opportunity House as well as WFIU/WTIU. She was a longtime, loyal fan of Hoosier basketball and football as well as a supporter of IU theatre and music groups. She was active in local Democratic political organizations. Late in life, she became the wife of Howard Canada, owner of Howard's Book Store. They enjoyed happy years together before Elizabeth was widowed one again. She enjoyed a long, healthy, happy and active life and will be deeply missed by her family. Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Susan Webb (Kenneth) of Bloomington, and two sons Steve (Janet) Weiser of Orinda, California, and John (Terri) Weiser of Charlottesville, Virginia, in addition to nine grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and four nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Edith Henry, son Andrew Weiser, and her three husband's. No viewing or visitation is planned. Funeral arrangements are pending. The family requests that remembrances take the form of contributions in her name to IU Health Hospital Home Health and Hospice P.O. Box 1149 Bloomington, IN 47402.
