Florence S. Jacobs

Florence S. Estella (Waterford) Jacobs was born on a brisk fall day, on November 09, 1932, the daughter of Claude Earl Waterford and Lorene (Alexander) Waterford. Florence was the third child of ten. The family lived in Washington Township, in the North Bloomington area for a short period before making Harrodsburg, Indiana their home. Several of the siblings lived out their lives in the Harrodsburg, Indiana area. When Florence was a little girl, her hair was full of golden curls. The family nicknamed her “Shirley Temple” because she resembled the then Childhood movie star, Shirley Temple. During Florence’s life …things got tuff. Florence and her two oldest sisters left home at an early age, they and a friend lived together in an apartment. Florence worked and lived with a family on Bloomington’s East side as a “Nanny”, to the family. Florence had to mature and grow up fast! At fourteen Florence met a young man from Smithville at the local skating rink, his name was Eugene Jacobs, they courted for a year, and married when Florence was fifteen years old. Her wedding picture depicts a beautiful childhood bride. This was a lasting relationship, for they remained together for over sixty years, until Eugene preceded Florence in death on March 09, 2010. She was also preceded in death by both parents, Claude Earl Waterford and Lorene Alexander Waterford and Three brothers: Joseph D. Waterford (Oct. 19, 1997), who was born on her 7th birthday, Jack L. Waterford (Sept. 13, 2005) and Donald Earl Waterford (Sept. 05, 2005) and Four Brothers-In-Law: Robert Greene, Cletis Floyd, Charles Wilson and Richard Sawyer. One Nephew: Roger Wayne Cummings (April 20, 1969-Viet Nam) Son -In- Law: Terry Lee Long (October 05, 2012) Florence is survived by, four children: Katrina L. Long (Bloomington, Indiana) Kathy L. Ragan(George), San Antonio, Texas, Steven E. Jacobs (Jung), Bloomington, Indiana and Lisa G. Jacobs (Ellettsville, Indiana) Seven Grandchildren: Jacob Ragan(Barbie), Summer Ragan Sullivan all of San Antonio, Texas, Steven Dale Long (Mindy) Jana Leigh Long, Ariel Hannah Jacobs, Annaliese Sara Jacobs all of Bloomington, Indiana and Dolan Jacobs of Ellettsville, IN. Three Great-Grand-Sons: Gavin and Caden Ragan of San Antonio, Texas and Brayden C. Smith of Bloomington, Indiana Five Sisters: Claudia Jean Greene, Ruth Floyd, Shirley Stevens (Minford) all of Bloomington, Indiana. Betty Sawyer of Shelbyville, Indiana and Doris Wilson of Spencer, Indiana. One Brother: Jerry A. Waterford (Janet) of Bedford, Indiana. And Sister-In-Law: Deanna Waterford (Jack) of Harrodsburg, Indiana. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. and great- great nephews. Florence had worked at: Sarkes Tarzian and RCA and also was a housekeeper to several. Local families, who she considered them to be her friends, some stayed in contact with her throughout her life. A well lived life was going merrily along…when Florence was afflicted with Parkinson’s Disease. Florence had fought a courageous battle against Parkinson’s Disease for the past nineteen years. A Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Homemaker, Caregiver, Friend, Hard Worker, Master Story-Teller and Survivor…just a few of the many titles of: Florence S. Friends will gather at the Allen Funeral Home, located at: 4155 South Old Highway 37 Bloomington, Indiana 47401 on: Sunday, January 17, 2016 from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. Services will be held on Monday, January 18, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. With visitation one hour before services begin. Burial will be at Clover Hill Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Indiana.
