Garnell Hamilton Jones

Garnell Hamilton Jones, 89 passed away on Monday, December 21, 2020 at Meadowood. She was born on January 31, 1931, in Moberly, Missouri to Garnett and Pearl Hamilton. She graduated from Cairo High School in 1948 and from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics in 1952. She was employed by the Baptist Sunday School Board, Nashville, Tennessee; First Baptist Church, Springfield, Missouri; Teachers College Columbia University, New York; Vanderbilt University Library, Nashville, Tennessee; Migrant Program, Blue River Valley School System; Mt. Summit, Indiana; and Isanogel Center, Muncie, Indiana. She typed countless Master’s theses for Ball State University students in Muncie, Indiana. She married George Jones on May 2, 1953. They were married 56 years until George’s death on February 28, 2010. In 1964 they moved from Nashville, Tennessee to Muncie, Indiana where George took a position on the faculty of Ball State University. They raised their family in Muncie and moved to Bloomington in 2000 to be near their grandchildren. They were very active in the Baptist Church in both Muncie and Bloomington. She is survived by her children, Lynette Russell (Mark) of Hockessin, Delaware, Dr. Daniel Jones (Becky Sharp) of Chillicothe, Missouri, and Dr. Andrew Jones (Jane) of Bloomington, Chris Smith (son-in-law) of Knoxville, Tennessee, grandchildren Gretchen (Sam) Chamberlain of Colville, Washington, Elizabeth (Josh) Wehe of Alamosa, Colorado, Grant (Nancy) Russell of Washington, DC, Haley (Adam) Young of Prairie Village, Kansas, Kelsey Jones of Kansas City, Missouri, Alexa Jones of Lawson, Missouri, Harper Jones of Chillicothe, Missouri, Allison Jones of Watertown, Massachusetts, William Jones of Bloomington, Christopher (Calli) Smith of Dallas, Texas and Blake Smith of Knoxville, Tennessee. Brother-in-law John (Karen) Jones of Fayette, Missouri. She was blessed with five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her beloved daughter Wendy Smith The family would like to thank the staff at Meadowood Nursing Home for their care and compassion over the last 3 years. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers donations be given to the GWJ Endowment Fund (7504) at Ball State University, PO Box 672, Muncie, IN 47308. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, December 26 at Grand Prairie Cemetery in Cairo, Missouri.
