Gilbert (Gib) Wayne Niswander

On July 3, 2023, Gilbert (Gib) Wayne Niswander, 71, entered into eternal rest with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Gib was born on February 4, 1952, in Bloomington, Indiana to Dores and Virginia (Miller) Niswander. He is survived by his soulmate and loving wife of 37 years, Nancy Ann (Sears) Niswander and their beloved dog, Patch. Gib is survived by his children, David Carmichael (Nicole), Kelly Mullis (Pete) and Whitney Niswander. Also surviving are his sister Glenda Johnson (Wayne) of Nashville, IN; brother John Belden (Terri) of Columbus, IN; sister-in-law Velma Conder of Scottsdale, AZ; and brother-in-law Jim Jackson of Scottsdale, AZ; grandchildren Bradley Carmichael (Kaleighi), Jeffrey Carmichael, Rebecca Carmichael, Elizabeth Carmichael, Faith Carmichael, Ben Carmichael, and Jordan Mullis (Leah); four great grandchildren and one expected in October 2023; several nieces and nephews. He was loved dearly by his family and will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, maternal grandparents William and Mary Miller, paternal grandparents Benjamin and Dorcas Niswander, a brother William Niswander, sister-in-law Jenny Niswander, brother-in-law Robert “Buck” Stogsdill, and a nephew. Gib was of the Christian faith and attended Miracle on 46 Apostolic Church. He served in the armed forces (Military Police) from 1972-1974. He attended the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield, IN and was employed by the Monroe County Sheriff's Department as a Captain and Detective for 20 years. He also worked for the Bloomington Hospital Ambulance Service. Gib was employed by the Monroe County School Corporation as a contract bus driver and retired as the Director of Transportation Services. He was the Pastor of Handy Ridge Word of Faith Ministries in Bloomington for 9 years, a member of the Sower's Ministry and passionate about mission work. He authored the book, “The Truth About Dying: From Police Officer to Pastor.” Gib was a gunsmith, an avid hunter, fisherman, and competitive marksman. He won “Top Lawman” and placed second overall in the National Bianchi Cup in 1986. During the last six years, Nancy and Gib traveled throughout the USA. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory, 4155 South Old State Road 37, Bloomington. Burial with Military Honors will follow at Clear Creek Cemetery. Gib’s family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2023, at the funeral home, and again from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday.
