James M. Hardy

James M. Hardy, 86 of Bloomington, Indiana died Wednesday, February 8, 2017 while vacationing in Panama City Beach, Florida. Jim was born on August 14, 1930 in Bloomington to James H. and Susan Elizabeth Hardy. He was married to Mildred “Mid” (Empson) Hardy for 62 years until her death in 2010. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and two infant sisters, Phyllis and Martha. Jim is survived by his daughters, Pat Ayers and husband Duke of Bloomington, Brenda Hardy and Roger Kent of Bloomington, Jacki Hopkins and husband John of Ellettsville, Jeanne Breeden and husband Steve of Eminence and sons, James “Bo” Hardy and wife Vicki of Bloomington and Michael Hardy and wife Donna of Bloomington. Grandchildren are John Ayers and Debbie Dennison, Rob Ayers and wife Jennifer, Christina LaMar and husband John, Brian Staten, Ryan Swafford and wife Samantha, Tyler Ann Hopkins, C.J. Breeden and wife Jena, Cory Breeden, Makenzie Sullivan and husband Craig, J.C. Hardy, David Hardy, and Jimmy Hardy. He is also survived by 16 great-grandchildren, his sister, Lois McClung of Bloomington, and his 18 year old cat, Molly. Jim retired from the Laborers International Union of North America Local 741 as business manager. He served in the Bloomington unit of the Indiana National Guard for over 32 years, where he retired as First Sargent. Jim was a 50 year member of Masonic Temple Lodge #22. He was also a lifelong member of Arlington United Methodist Church. Jim enjoyed watching sports, especially football. He was an ISHAA football official for many years. He enjoyed meeting with friends for the Wednesday “Red Leg” luncheons at the American Legion. Jim liked to camp and spend time outdoors. He enjoyed sharing stories and memories with family and friends. Jim especially enjoyed the memories he had of spending winters in Lady Lake, Florida with Mid. The family would like to thank Dr. Bomba, Dr. Rink, I.U. Healthcare Hospice, and caregivers, Tanysha and Tonya Heston and Charlene Taylor for the care they provided to Jim. A special note of gratitude to Jim’s full time caregiver, Celeste “Boo Boo” Lapointe and her dog, Travis for the friendship and companionship given to Jim over the last two years. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday February 20, 2017 at Arlington United Methodist Church with Pastor Jim Roach officiating. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens, where the American Legion Honor Guard will conduct Military Graveside Rites. Friends may call at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory, 4155 S. Old State Road 37, Bloomington, on Sunday February 19, from 2:00 – 7:00 and one hour prior to the service at Arlington United Methodist Church. There will be a Masonic Service at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Memorial contributions may be made to Arlington United Methodist Church or The National Federation of the Blind, in care of the funeral home.
