James Omer Reinhart, 82, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 13, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, craftsmanship, and love. Jim was born in Evansville on December 8, 1943, to Omer and Mary Ruth Reinhart. He graduated from Reitz Memorial High School in 1961 and later earned a degree in Chemistry from the University of Evansville in 1965. But long before college, Jim learned some of life’s most important lessons growing up in his family’s restaurant, the “Dubl R.” That’s where he developed the strong work ethic and gift for storytelling that stayed with him his entire life. In 1966, Jim married the love of his life, Jane. Their story began like many great ones do — cruising around with friends when Jim first noticed Jane’s beautiful eyes and warm smile. That moment started a partnership that lasted 59 years and was filled with love, family, and plenty of adventures. Jane was always his favorite travel companion until her passing this past October. Jim was a master carpenter whose hands could turn a piece of wood into something meaningful and lasting. One of his most special contributions was crafting the crucifix at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, where his steady faith was an important part of his life. Family meant everything to Jim. As a father, he was always there cheering from the sidelines — sometimes so enthusiastically at Adam’s Little League games that the umpire had to politely ask him to take a seat. Jim always took it more as a suggestion than a rule. He loved classic country music, especially Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, the kind of songs that told real stories. As a grandfather — known as Pop-pop, Grandpa, or Potsie — Jim truly came into his own. He didn’t just watch his grandchildren grow up, he played with them. There were lawn mower rides, woodworking projects, and countless small moments that became lasting memories. Jim loved to travel and valued his friendships deeply. He made trips to Hawaii to visit his best friend, traveled to Italy, spent time in Washington, D.C., and shared a meaningful pilgrimage to the Holy Land with Jane and their church. Friends knew Jim as someone who was quick with a joke and never short on a story. Even in retirement he rarely sat still for long. There was always a project to work on, someone to talk with, or a story to tell. Jim was a lifelong fan of Indiana University basketball and more recently - a proud supporter of IU football. He was a faithful member of St. John the Apostle Catholic Church, serving as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and participating in the men’s group. He was also a founding member of the church’s Breakfast Club — because Jim believed faith, friendship, and a good breakfast belonged together. He was also a member of the Jaycees. Jim is survived by his children, Adam (Stacey) Reinhart, Michele (Bob) Stanton, and Stephanie (John) Mitchell. He was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren — Gary (Niki), Kacey (Philip), Riley (Jake), Lauren, Lillian, Kendall, Peyton, and Micah — and a joyful great-grandfather to Hunter and Jett. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jane Marie Reinhart; his parents, Omer and Mary Ruth Reinhart; and his nephews, Matt Reinhart and Mark Wagner. Visitation will be held at St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Ellettsville on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. until the funeral Mass at 12:00 p.m. (Eastern Time). Jim will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery in Evansville on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. (Central Time). In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Jim’s honor. Jim built many things in his life — with wood, with his hands, and with his heart. The stories he told, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave will stay with his family and friends forever.
