Jerry Wayne Deckard

Jerry Wayne Deckard, born on August 5, 1946, in Bloomington, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 22, 2024, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family. He was 78 years old. Jerry was the beloved husband of 59 years to his high school sweetheart, Linda. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and lasting memories. He was a devoted father to his two daughters, Mary Ducette and Jeri Lynn Deckard Gatch, and a proud grandfather to Lily and Lewis, who brought him immense joy. He was the son of the late Finis Edward Deckard and Pearl Loretta Gray Deckard, who instilled in him the values of hard work and kindness that he carried throughout his life. A skilled and accomplished builder, Jerry left his mark on homes and businesses throughout his community. His craftsmanship and dedication touched the lives of many, and his work will continue to stand as a testament to his hard work and passion. In addition to his building work, Jerry spent a significant part of his career as a manager at a local lumber yard and building supply company, where he was admired for his leadership and expertise. Later, he retired from Indiana University, where he was respected for his dedication and contributions to the institution. Jerry’s deep faith in God was the foundation of his life. He held a strong belief that one day, we will all be reunited with him, and his family finds peace and comfort in that promise. Born and raised in Bloomington, Indiana, Jerry had a deep connection to his hometown and its traditions. He was a lifelong fan of the Indiana Hoosiers. Whether it was football or basketball, he cheered them on with enthusiasm and pride. Jerry was a man who valued friendships and connections. He enjoyed the company of both young and old, always offering a kind word, a story, or a helping hand to those who needed it. His warmth and generosity made him a beloved figure in his community. He leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and cherished memories. Jerry will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him. Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 28th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington, followed by a service at 1 p.m. A processional to Walker's Chapel Cemetery will take place immediately after the service, where Jerry will be laid to rest.
