Margrethe C. O'Connor

Margrethe C. O’Connor, 84, of Bloomington passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at the IU Bloomington Hospice House surrounded by her family. She was born on March 16, 1940 in New York, NY the daughter of Herbert and Karen (Nielsen) Chadwick. Margrethe grew up in Nutley, NJ. In her younger years she was a very talented ballerina who had dreams of becoming a professional, but life happened and plans changed. Margrethe moved to Chicago, where she worked for the National Association of Realtors and became a White Sox fan. She met Edward O’Connor and his daughter Sherry in Dollar Bay, Michigan. Edward and Margrethe were married on June 22, 1974. They lived in Dollar Bay, where sons Kevin and Greg were born. Edward died unexpectedly in 1979, and Margrethe and family moved to Bloomington in 1981. Margrethe retired from Indiana University after 25 yrs as Office Administrator for the School of Education. She was an avid IU Basketball fan and loved music, especially Neil Diamond. Margrethe was a member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church since 1981. She was very active in the church and choir. She was very giving and would offer support to anyone in need. Margrethe’s greatest love was her grandchildren and being able to spend time with them. Margrethe is survived by her 3 children Kevin O’Connor (Patricia Bechinski), Gregory O’Connor (Kary), and Sherry Hansen (John); five grandchildren Roderick, Evan (Selah), Alex, Jamie, and Jack; brother Pete Chadwick (Charry); sister Karen Berg; sister-in-law Nancy Craven (Jerry), Marie Blakeman, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward, parents Herb and Karen Chadwick, mother-in-law and father-in-law Eleanor and Paul Abrelat, sister Joanne Chadwick, sister-in-law Pat Johnson, brother-in-law Doug Johnson, brother-in-law Dallas Blakeman and brother-in-law Rev. Terry Berg. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 27, 2024, at St. Thomas Lutheran Church with The Rev. Adrianne Meier officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church.
