Martha J. Smiley

Martha J. Smiley, of Bloomington, died at 1:30 p.m., Monday January 1, 2024 at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital. She was born in Fostoria, Ohio on October 2, 1932, and was the daughter of Arthur Dennis and Lavon (Reigler) Dennis. She married David Smiley on June 20, 1959. Martha retired from Indiana University Halls of Residence in July 1999 having served as Food Stores Manager, Administrative Dietitian, Area Food Service Coordinator and Foods Manager with 27 years of service. She also worked as the Clinical Dietitian at Memorial Hospital in St. Joseph, MI from 1970 - 1981. She graduated from Gibsonburg, OH High School as Salutatorian in 1950, then earned a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from The Ohio State University. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-laws, Kendra and Dennis Nigg of Mooresville, IN and Kecia and Matt McKane of Milford, MI; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kevin and Denise Smiley of Interlochen, MI, Karl Smiley of Mishawaka, IN, Kurt and Laurie Smiley of Bloomington, IN, and her brother Jim Dennis of Fremont, OH. She had twelve grandchildren, Karen (Mike) Kuch, Steven, Joshua, Caleb, Kyle, Lauren (Chris), Alex, Cole, Blake, Ethan (Chelsea), Adam (Amy) Dunn, Matt (Mary) Dunn; and seven great-grandchildren, Cordell, Arianna, Brendan, Rylan, Logan, Adelynn, Little Wolf. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband David, her sister Ruth Green and one grandchild, Connor McKane. After her retirement she enjoyed traveling, Bunco, book club, attending IU Auditorium Series and many volunteer activities at Opportunity House and Wonder Lab Museum of Science. She was a member of the IU University Club and IU Retiree Association. She moved to the Meadowood Retirement Community in August 2023 and enjoyed socializing with the other residents. She was an avid reader and liked crossword puzzles and Scrabble. In lieu of flowers, Martha's children ask that contributions be made in memory of their mother to Opportunity House and Wonder Lab. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon, January 7, 2024 at 2:00PM at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory 4155 South Old State Road 37. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View Cemetery. Visitation will be held Saturday, January 6, 2024 from 5:00PM until 8:00PM also at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory.
