Marvin Carmack

Marvin Carmack, 96, of Bloomington passed away July 6, 2010 at Bloomington Hospital. He was the only child of Robert Rae and Elsie (Jackson) Carmack, born on September 1, 1913 in Vermillion County, Indiana. He married Joan Margaret Scully of Western Springs, Illinois in 1960. Marvin completed his A.B. Honors degree at the University of Illinois with a major in Organic Chemistry in 1937. He then enrolled in graduate studies with a major in Organic Chemistry at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor). He completed the requirements for the M.S. degree in 1939 and the Ph. D. in 1940. Marvin returned to the University of Illinois in 1940-41 for postdoctoral research. In the fall of 1941, Marvin joined the faculty of chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In addition to his teaching organic chemistry, Professor Carmack was the Official Investigator for the three years during World War II of a contract between the University of Pennsylvania and the U. S. Office of Research and Development. Marvin began his tenure at Indiana University in 1958 where he remained for the rest of his career, retiring in 1983. Following his retirement, Professor Carmack continued to follow research progress in natural products and sulfur chemistry and to write essays on scientific subjects. Marvin is survived by his foster son, Jonathan Cameron Schoch; and several nieces and nephews, Teresa (Lockrem) Lenzo, Steve Skoglund, Emilie (Lockrem) Endean, Valerie (Lockrem) Brenci, Lorilei (Long) Croft, Barbara (Long) Kiep, Thomas Skoglund, Harold Long, Angela (Long) Austin, William Skoglund, John Lockrem, Larry Long, Mary Kay (Skoglund) Oneil, Joseph Long, Martin Skoglund, Maria (Long) Corcoran, John Long, Lisa (Long) Tetrault and Dan Skoglund. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, wife Joan Carmack, one niece Alana (Long) Croft and one nephew James Long. Memorial contributions can be made to the Indiana University Foundation, P.O. Box 500, Bloomington, IN 47402 for the Joan & Marvin Carmack Chair in Bio-Organic Chemistry. “Carmack Chair” should be noted on the memo line of the check. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
