Norman Lowell Shields

Norman Lowell Shields went to sleep and woke up in Heaven on March 17, 2011. He was born to Grover and Etta (Parker) Shields on August 12, 1922 and lived in Monroe County all his life. He attended Handy Elementary, Smithville and Bloomington High Schools. He graduated from Smithville High School and enjoyed playing all sports, but he loved basketball the most. Upon graduation he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Green on December 13, 1941. This would have been their 70th year together. Norman worked various places then got a job with RCA of Bloomington and became a highly skilled tool and die maker. During this time he designed many tools for RCA to improve the assembly of televisions. He worked many years in the Supervisory level. He also served as the business agent for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers at the Bloomington Plant. Norman continued his love of sports after high school as an IHSAA High School Referee. After retiring from RCA he continued his love of sports by working for Indiana University Sporting events. He loved to share his many plants and vegetables from his garden with family and friends and was always ready to go fishing. He dearly loved his family and friends and knew no strangers. He was a member of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church. He was the founding president of the former Sanders Elementary School PTA. His survivors include his wife, Nancy (Green) Shields, two daughters and sons-in-law; Janie and Jerry Fivecoate of Bloomington and Marianne and Michael Nordberg of Marco Island, FL, one son and daughter-in-law, Gary L. and Patty Shields of Bloomington, four grandchildren; Kelly (Jason) Kay, Carol (Andrias) Pantauw, Emily Nordberg and Andrew Nordberg, four great grand-children;Samaritan Kay, Jackson Kay, Jonathan Kay and Abigail Pantauw, three sisters; Theo Stillions, Naomi Russell and Nancy Sears, all of Bloomington, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grover and Etta Shields, two sisters, Beverly Shields and Mary Bruner and one foster sister, Mae Allen. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, March 21st at Sherwood Oaks Christian Church with Alan Phillips officiating. Burial will be at Clear Creek Cemetery. Friends may call at Allen Funeral Home on Sunday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. and at the church on Monday one hour preceding the service.
