Robert H. Mead

Robert H. Mead, 91, of Bloomington, passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at his residence. He was born on December 21, 1926 in Petersburg, Indiana; the son of Millard Q. and Nellie E. (Robling) Mead. Bob graduated from Indiana Teacher’s College in 1958 where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in education. He briefly taught at Lawrence County High School. Bob relocated to Iowa, where he began working on his graduate degree at Northern Iowa University. He returned to Bloomington, where he taught Geometry and Physics at Bloomington High School South until his retirement. During his summers, Bob operated his ice cream truck, which was stationed at Bryan Park and the Monroe County Fairgrounds. Bob later served in the Indiana General Assembly as a pension analyst, and was named Monroe County Father of the Year in 1981. He assisted with the fundraising to jumpstart Owen County YMCA and enjoyed family get-togethers, playing poker, bee keeping, bowling, fishing, mushroom and eating homemade pie; especially Bob Andy pie. Bob was a veteran of the United States Navy, having served in World War II. He was a member of the American Legion, Post #18, and The Moose Lodge No. 1081. Bob was fascinated with how things worked thus he will be remembered for his inventions of many gadgets. Bob is survived by his children, Steve (Eileen) Mead, Kathy (Mark) Wisley, Cindy (Mike) Malone, Lisa (David) Holmes, Tina (Jeff) Arbuckle, Beth (Jeff) Dittrich, and Vicki Dawson; grandchildren, Matt, Daniel, Nick, Krystal, Kyle, Andrew, Logan, Brandon, Kristin, Ben, and Ty; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Bill Mead, Lola Abell, Marvin Doyle Mead, Landis Mead and Jean Zuroske; and former wife, Evelyn Hume. A funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, August 17, 2018 at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory, 4155 S. Old State Road 37, Bloomington. Family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until the time of service. For those who are unable to attend the visitation or service are welcome to gather at Calvary Baptist Church, 3501 North Prow Road, Bloomington following the service, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Bob’s memory to the VFW or IU Health Bloomington Hospice.
