Sonja Shields

BLOOMINGTON – Sonja Shields, 80, of Bloomington, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 9, 1940, in Monroe County, Indiana, the daughter of Gerald Crouch and Gertrude (Hall) Crouch. She was a graduate of Bloomington High School. Sonja married the love of her life, Jerry Shields, on April 17, 1958, in Bloomington. They were married for 62 years. Jerry preceded her in death November 22, 2020. She was heartbroken without her best friend and soulmate. Sonja was a homemaker and Nana to many. She had also worked at Bloomington Hospital and was the secretary/bookkeeper for Jerry Shields Construction for over 50 years. She loved her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, antiques and working in her yard. She was well known for her beautiful flowers. Sonja is survived by four children, Lisa (Daryl) Tate, Angela (Ron Wright) Shields Bryant, Todd (Sherri) Shields, all of Bloomington, and Troy (Jinni) Shields of Springville; nine grandchildren, Emily Tate, Erica Tate, Lucas Bryant, Bailey (Darren) Altop, Jesse (Jessica) Kinser, Shelby (JD) Robertson, Levi Shields, Hannah (Jayce Rodrick) Shields and Chase Shields; and three great-grandchildren, Riley Robertson, Lane Robertson and Presley Altop, who just arrived January 22. Also surviving are her sister, Linda Harp, brother, Jim Crouch, brother-in-law, Mike (Peggy) Shields, sisters-in-law, Delores (Jeff) King, Sharlene (Ronnie) Lloyd and Sue (David) Baxter, all of Bloomington, several nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog Bella. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Jerry, her parents, brother Mike Crouch, infant brother Jerry Crouch and infant sister Patricia Crouch. No services are scheduled at this time. Cremation rites have been accorded. Burial is planned for a later date at Clover Hill Cemetery in Harrodsburg. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to a charity of one’s choice.
