Terry Kathleen "Kathy" Cunningham Gooley

Terry Kathleen "Kathy" Cunningham Gooley, 72, of Bloomington passed away Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at the IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Kathy had health issues that she had been coping with in the last 20 years, but she amazingly seemed to bounce back and keep going. Kathy was born on July 17, 1950 in Indianapolis. She was the daughter to the late Charles and Barbara (Palmer) Champlin. She spent her early childhood in Bloomington, and then grew up in Muncie, graduating from Muncie Central High School in 1968. She worked as a dental assistant for an oral surgeon for many years, often working additional waitressing and bartending jobs. In the 1980's Kathy went back to school to earn her BS degree in nursing, allowing her to work as a registered nurse at the Bloomington Hospital and then with Hospice. Over the years, many of Kathy's family, friends, and co-workers have commented on her constant on-the-go energy, humor, story-telling, compassion, and love of nursing. She also enjoyed crafting and antiquing, spending time buying, displaying, and selling antiques at a few of the local antique shops. Kathy did love her fur babies, usually having several cats and dogs in her home. There were some times she had and cared for parrots, birds, hamsters, and fish. She also enjoyed meeting up with family, cousins, and friends, eating out, shopping, or just sharing/remembering stories and adventures. She and Steve also did love keeping up on IU athletics, current events, and definitely politics. Kathy is survived by her sister Sarah Shaffer, nephew Travis Shaffer (stepson River), niece Shana Shaffer Windell (fiance Jay Dendy, children Charlee Ann, Rory Mae, and Otis Lin), stepson Christopher Cunningham (Missouri), stepdaughter Samantha Gooley Ridge (John and their children Vanessa and Mason), sister-in-law Rhonda Cunningham VanBuskirk (Philip and their children Heather and Heath Simpson/Missouri), mother-in-law Minnie Cunningham (Missouri), brother-in-law Jack Gooley (Alice and children), sister-in-law Joni Gooley (and children, in Florida). Kathy also had many "Champlin" (in Martinsville) and "Palmer" (in Indianapolis) cousins that she kept in touch with, as well as several of the "Gooley" cousins too. She was preceded in death by her parents, earlier in life (1987) she tragically lost her husband Ron Cunningham, and recently (this June) lost her husband Steve (they married in 2007), and stepson Dan Gooley. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the IU Health Hospice house or the Bloomington Animal Shelter. A memorial celebration will be held on Friday, December 9, 2022 from 4:00pm-6:00pm at the Allen Funeral Home and Crematory (4155 South Old State Road 37, in Bloomington).
