Mandy Jo Chitwood

Mandy Jo Chitwood, age 48 of Bloomington, passed away Saturday evening, July 15, 2023 at her residence. She was born in Columbus, Indiana to Raymond L. Lucas, Jr. and Teresa A. Rose Lucas. She graduated from Mooresville High School in 1993 and then received her bachelors degree in education from IUPUI and ultimately her masters degree in special education from WGU. Mandy taught multiple grades in the Waverly elementary school before moving on to the Neil A. Armstrong elementary school where she taught elementary education and then eventually special education also at the Neil A. Armstrong Elementary school. She thoroughly enjoyed spending her free time reading, and spending time with her family. She was passionate about her students and always looking for a way to enhance their experience. She was a two-time Hope award winner at the Neil A. Armstrong Elementary School, and truly loved all of the children she came in contact with during her teaching career. Mandy leaves behind her husband, Winfred Chitwood, and their son, Peyton of Unionville, her brother, Raymond L. Lucas, III and his wife, Shannon Berry Lucas of Carmel, parents, Raymond L. Lucas, Jr. and Theresa Lucas of Mooresville, niece, Alexus Baker, in-laws, Rickey Chitwood and wife Dianne Chitwood, of Bloomington, Christy (Chitwood) McKinnon, and her husband, Michael of Indianapolis, and Bonnie (Chitwood) Savage of Port Charlotte, Florida and her son Robert Richey. Funeral services for Mandy will be held Thursday morning at 11 AM at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory 4155 S. Old State Rd. 37. Burial will follow in the Chitwood family cemetery in Unionville. Visitation will be held on Wednesday afternoon and evening from 3 PM until 8 PM, also, at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory. Once a teacher always a teacher, Mandy dedicated her life to helping kids be their best, and a good book went a long way. When not reading to kids, she was speed reading to maximize her book count on Goodreads. Consider a gift to Dolly’s foundation to give books to kids in Indiana and around the world. Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation: Mandy battled Crohn’s for many years, never complaining but always wishing there was a cure. She would be honored to have donations sent to this organization in her Memory.
