Ananthalekshmi "Jaya" Seshan

Jaya, mother of Srinivasan Iyengar (Srini), grandmother of Advaith Iyengar, and mother-in-law of Jayasree Srinivasan (Jay), (from Bloomington), has begun her journey toward the heavenly abode. Jaya passed on February 15, 2023, at 17:52 hrs Eastern US time, at IU Health Bloomington hospital. Jaya, was a mathematician who carried out research in medical informatics and medical statistics for forty years in India’s premier research facility, Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC). She carried out academic research in India, in the 1960s and 1970s, breaking away from the stereotype set for women in those days. In this sense, she was a trailblazer and role model for generations to follow. She was a huge connoisseur of the south-Indian style of Indian classical music known as Carnatic music, a singer, and played the string instrument known Veena. While she lived a major part of her life in Bombay, India (now Mumbai), she spent most of the last 10 years of her life with her son, daughter-in-law and grandson in Bloomington, Indiana. In addition to Jaya’s son, grandson and daughter-in-law, Jaya was deeply connected to her brothers, in-laws, nephews and nieces. She is survived by her brother Padmanabhan Ramaswamy Iyengar (Coimbatore, India), brothers-in-law, T. Rajagopal, Padmanabha Desikar and T. Sreenivasa Gopal (Chennai, India), sisters-in-law, Usha Varahan (Hyderabad, India), Vathsala Padmanabhan and Prema Srinivasan (Coimbatore, India), nephews, Sreenivasan Rajagopal (from Boston), Sreenath Rajagopal (from San Francisco), Shreeram Varahan (Hyderabad, India), Babu Padmanabhan and Satish Padmanabhan (Bangalore, India), and nieces, Latha Srinivasan and Kala Vaideesh (Kerala, India), Vidya Seshan (Muscat), Sugandha Sundaram (Chennai), and Usha Sekar (Coimbatore). She was preceded in this journey by her loving husband of 50+ years, Dr. T. Sesha Iyengar, her parents, Seshan Ramaswamy Iyengar, and Kothai Ammal Iyengar, and her brothers, T. R. Seshan, Sundaram Ramaswamy Iyengar, Srinivasan Ramaswamy Iyengar, and R. Lakshmi Varahan. She was deeply loved and will be deeply missed by her family and her friends.
