John Michael "Mike" Kensill

John Michael “Mike” Kensill, 76, of Greenwood, Indiana, passed away at his home on July 1, 2026. Born on October 27, 1949, in Elkhart, Indiana, Mike lived a life defined by integrity, generosity, hard work, unwavering faith, and a deep devotion to his family and friends. Mike graduated from Howe Military School before earning his degree in Veterinary Science from Purdue University in 1972, where he was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Following graduation, he served in the Peace Corps during the early 1970s, an experience that reflected his adventurous spirit and desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. An entrepreneur at heart, Mike built a successful career as a business owner, real estate developer, and investor. Through decades of hard work, discipline, and vision, he developed an extensive portfolio of rental properties and businesses. Those who knew him admired not only his business acumen but also his willingness to mentor others and generously share his knowledge and experience. Mike had many passions throughout his life. He was an avid hunter, a devoted member of the Indiana chapter of the Train Collectors Association, and looked forward each week to the Wednesday “Train Talk” gatherings with his close friends. He was also a proud Freemason. Above all of his accomplishments, Mike’s greatest pride was his family. He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. John Tucker Kensill, his mother Katherine Elizabeth Kensill, his sisters Karen Emge, and Steph Kiefer, and his beloved wife Susan Kensill, whose passing a mere 7 months ago profoundly strengthened his already deep Christian faith. During the final months of his life, Mike devoted himself to further exploring his relationship with God and encouraging those he loved to pursue lives of faith, integrity, humility, and truth. He is survived by his son, Justin Kensill and fiancée Alyssa Levko; his daughter, Megan Bowerman, and her husband, Matt Bowerman; and his cherished grandsons, Elijah, Noah, and Asher Bowerman, who brought him immeasurable joy. He is also survived by his brother Kim Kensill, and sister Susan Fenton, as well as several nieces and nephews. Mike possessed a unique combination of strength and tenderness. To those who first met him, he could appear reserved and tough. But those fortunate enough to know him well discovered a deeply compassionate, loyal, and loving man whose generosity knew few limits. He was the patriarch of his family—the one everyone turned to for wisdom, guidance, perspective, and encouragement. Perhaps no tribute speaks more clearly to the kind of man Mike was than something his family noticed after his passing. As phone calls were made to friends, business associates, and lifelong acquaintances, an extraordinary pattern emerged. Time and again, men from every chapter of his life responded with the very same words: “Mike was my best friend.” To have so many people sincerely believe they shared that distinction is a testament to the remarkable way Mike made others feel valued, respected, and loved. He lived by principles that never changed: keep your word, work hard, remain humble, treat others with kindness and respect, and never stop growing in character and faith. One of his favorite sayings perfectly reflected the way he lived: “Good things come to those who wait, but only that which is left over by those who hustle.” His family will remember him not only for what he built, but for the wisdom he imparted, the character he modeled, the faith he embraced, and the unconditional love he gave to those closest to him. His legacy lives on in the lives of his children, grandchildren, family, and the countless friends whose lives are better because they knew him. He will be deeply missed and forever loved. Memorial Services for Mike will be held Friday, July 31, 2026 at the Allen Funeral Home and Crematory 4155 South Old State Rd. 37 at 1 PM. Visitation will also be held the same day from 11 AM in the morning until time of the service at 1 PM.
