John Derek Vint

John Derek Prescott Vint passed away on June 5th, at 3:13 a.m. in his home. Derek was born on August 13, 1954 in Long Island New York. He always considered the 13th lucky. He was the son of the late John Prescott Vint and Catherine E (Donna) Vint. Derek moved to Bloomington from New York while in grade school. He lived where the Optometry Building is today, until they had to move for the construction. He worked at Indiana University for 40 years, in the Classical Studies department. He graduated from Indiana University with a Master's Degree. He is survived by his wife Kim, two brothers Peter (Rita) and their children, Peter, Colin and Mei-Li: Roger (Teri) and their children Joseph and Lisa. And a host of great nephews and nieces as well as his mother and father in law Harold and Jerry Sue Sherman, all their children and children's children, who he dearly cherished also survive. Derek passed from this world with out having the opportunity to dance with his wife to the new polka four CD set he did purchase for himself last Christmas. His wife blames the CUBS for his passing. He was 62 years young. He passed away in the home we bought after decades of work toiling into the sunset. Swimming in Bryan Park Pool, sledding down the hills, biking around Campus on Sundays, playing "horse" on the church lot, and laughing till it hurt. Taught his wife cats are not dogs and do not rub them the wrong way. Traveling with Tim was always more enjoyable counting road kill. He would call his mother in law and sing "Crazy" by Pasty Cline..... He was a great tipper particularly when his father in law was dinning. Had an on going battle with brother Roger who had the bluest eyes..Roger you win by default. Still talks about the evening when his wife defeated brother Peter in an arm wrestling contest, Derek felt like he could not brag because his wife's ring was crushed. He thanks his partner in crime and best man Jeffrey who always got Derek in trouble. They coined a phrase that confused wife Kim for many years. He gets to join his pal Gary (whose birthday they shared). Gary allowed Rita to catch a chicken for a Hog Heaven roast. He had assistance to write to Marios' mother in Greece, explaining the odd habit of baby pictures in the HT to "charm" someone. He learned how to golf with Ian by hitting street lights. His affection with old cars made his wife happy. They lived in the city so the collection of junk was not an option. He collected friends instead. Charity and kindness were gifts from his mother, might as well add humor and intelligence as they go hand in hand . The sound of his laughter when talking to his mother still resonants in my ear. Loved Cadillacs, country music, and Will Shortz puzzles. Would go around the house singing "If you want to be happy for the rest of your life never make a pretty woman your wife". Again, leaving his wife confused. Will miss his comfort, bravery and the joy of each day. The fresh orange juice and coffee he made each morning, calling me in the afternoon, and making sure the outside lights were on when it got dark to greet me on my way home. The smalls in life are what make it all bearable and preciously unforgettable. Joy to you my brave love. Oh Lord grant me vision, Oh Lord grant me speed (Gram Parsons) . In the words of his favorite comedian...."And away we go..." A celebration of his life will be held at Beck Chapel on June 24th from 1:30 to 2:00 for close family and friends who wish to share a remembrance, then from 2:00 to 4:00 the family will receive guests at the University Club in the Indiana Memorial Union Building.
