John Snow

John F. Snow died peacefully at noon April 19th, 2012 at his home. He was born on December 27, 1922 to Burgess G. Snow and Florence Payton Snow at Fanny Hollow in southwestern Monroe County. His legal birthday is January 1, 1923 due to his birth not being recorded until then. He graduated from Bloomington High School in 1942, and then joined the U.S. Navy. He served on the U.S.S. Prairie before being assigned to the U.S.S. Mindanao ARG-3 where he served as a first-class ship fitter. After World War II ended, John Stayed in the Navy Reserves, and was later sent to the Korean War. Back at home after WWII, John began work as a front-end alignment mechanic, first at Graham Motor Sales, then later at Bloomington Tire, where he worked from 1949 until his retirement in 1995. He is survived by his daughters, Darlene Vaughan of Indianapolis, Terri Snow and Melanie Robey of Bloomington, and Cheryl Lamm of Bloomington; three sisters, Doris Inman of Bloomfield, Becky Voorhies of Alabama, and Wilma and Don Chestnut of Linton; grandchildren, Robert and Jill Vaughan, Susan and Randy Dolinsky, Heather Lamm and Jarrod Crouch, and Austin Lamm; great-grandchildren, Xander and Mackenzie Vaughan, Tyler and Erika Dolinsky, Ashton, Kya, Josh, Lydia, and Adam Crouch and Adrianna and Tavian Tinney. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Hillenburg Snow; his sister Joan Stannard and brother Roger Snow; niece Linda Jergensen, nephew Thomas Snow and niece Patty Inman. John enjoyed working in the garden, and was well-known for his tasty tomatoes. He was a member of AmVets, VFW, Moose, and American Legion. In his younger days he loved to camp and fish with his wife Lucille, and later with his children and grandchildren. John Never knew a stranger and was well-loved by all who met him. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 23, 2012 at Allen Funeral Home, 4155 S. Old State Rd.37; with Lloyd Swango officiating. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens with Military Rites conducted by the Veterans Honor Guard. Family will receive friends from 3-7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to IU Health Hospice or Carmichael Cemetery.
