Joyce S. Almond

Joyce S. Almond, 84, of Los Angeles, California, formerly of Bloomington IN, passed away on May 1, 2023 in her home in the company of her family. She was born November 8, 1938 in Scottsburg, Indiana the daughter of Clarence M. and Jewell Mount Shields. Clarence worked for Bechtel laying the gas pipeline. He had to travel for work, so Joyce lived all over the country, moving frequently from the age of five. Joyce was a 1957 graduate of Luther L Wright High School in Ironwood, Michigan. She was proud of being her high school valedictorian, and chose to stay behind in Ironwood for her senior year, after her parents had to move again. She was a 1961 graduate of UCLA, with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics, with honors. Joyce married the love of her life Gerald “Jerry” Lee Almond in Crestline, CA on August 10, 1961. Having met at UCLA in a ballroom dance class, they were happily married 49 years, together over 50. Joyce worked as an “Aid to the Blind” social worker in the 1960’s in Sacramento, CA. After moving to Bloomington, she worked as a store manager for Viewpoint book and gift store with her husband Jerry from 1970-75. She was the co-owner of the Four Seasons card and gift store in Bloomington from 1976-1978. Later, she was a children’s book buyer for Waldenbooks in College Mall until retiring. Joyce was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in Bloomington. She loved reading, watching IU Basketball, listening to music and going to see musical theater. She was a dedicated, kind and loving mother and grandmother. Joyce loved her family, and loved being with her family and friends. She will be so greatly missed. Joyce is survived by her children, Grace Almond, of Fredonia, AZ; Christopher Almond, of Los Angeles, CA; one granddaughter, Jewel E. Keenan; and an array of caring family & friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Jewell Shields, and her husband, Jerry Almond. Visitation will be held from 12:00pm to 2:00pm, Saturday, May 27, 2023 at the Allen Funeral Home, 4155 S. Old St Rd 37 Bloomington, IN. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 2:00pm. Burial will follow at Clear Creek Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or Monroe County Humane Society.
