Judith Ann Grannan

Judith Ann (Dugan) Grannan, 78, passed away peacefully on Feb. 7, 2023, in Bloomington, Indiana. Though she spent most of her life in Bloomington, Judy had an adventurous spirit, a curious mind and an urge to know the world. She could also be quite persnickety. She held a private pilots license and scuba certification and was fluent in Klingon. She was a daring cook, sci-fi nerd and was attracted to programs that expanded her mind. She was a lifelong learner. She made tasty but aesthetically questionable green meatloaf and relished a healthy plate of dolmas and feta as much as a cold glass of Guinness. She was a dedicated British Premier League soccer fan and her prized possession was her West Ham United soccer jersey, gifted by her son Ed, who in 2006—along with his wife Melissa—treated her to a trip to the World Cup in Germany, the highlight of her travels. But most of all, she loved sharing her interests with her children and many grandchildren, most of whom lived nearby. She encouraged her family members to be authentic and fundamentally themselves. Judy started her college studies at Indiana University at age 40, obtaining her bachelor’s degree in 1989 and a master of library science in 1993. While in college, she lived at Tulip Tree on the IU campus, where she befriended many international students and was dedicated to her studies. It was during these college years that she met her best friend Lena Snethen, at Ballantine Hall, at the only remaining indoor smoking section. She could usually be seen with perfectly manicured nails, her Sunday-night ritual. She would take her children and later her grandchildren to the IU campus, stopping into coffeeshops at the Memorial Union and taking them for lunch at Runcible Spoon. She worked as an IU librarian in the Serial Acquisitions Department until 2010. In retirement, she was an enthusiastic Game of Thrones fan and grandparent, fielding calls and keeping secrets. She hosted Boar’s Head salami-fueled slumber parties with the grandkids and seemed as interested in her grandpets as she was in her grandchildren. She encouraged her daughter Christy through nursing school and was extremely proud of both sons’ military service. As a single mother, she taught her daughters the importance of the safe word “Horatio.” She was her daughter’s best friend. Judy was born Jan. 24, 1945, in Vineland, NJ, to Harold Anthony and Julia (Barrett) Dugan. She was raised by her paternal grandparents Cornelius James and Mabel Agnes (Oglesby) Dugan in Evansville, Indiana. It was there she met her husband, Ed, who passed away in 1982. Judy leaves behind her three children, Ed Grannan, Dave Grannan, and Christy Rice, and their spouses. She is survived by 11 grandchildren: Toni, Zack, Cydney, John, Gavin, Luke, Kaylee, Emma, Brylee, Zavier and Zoe, along with four great grandchildren and her sister, Darlene (Dugan) Blumenauer of Evansville. Two children, Cathy Jo Vaughn and Deeanna Lee Grannan, preceded her in death, along with her brother Harold “Junior” Dugan and her parents.
