Phyllis Dean Carpenter

Phyllis Dean Carpenter, 95, of Bloomington, left us to be with our Lord on Monday, February 11, 2019 at Monroe Hospital. She was born on July 21, 1923 in Mitchell, Indiana; the daughter of Cecil and Leona (Hackney) Allspaw. Phyllis was a school bus driver for 27 years, a job that allowed her to touch the lives of many children. She delighted running into her former students as adults. Phyllis never knew a stranger. She enjoyed visiting with people, those she knew and those she didn’t. She loved all of the years she met her friends for breakfast at Wee Willies on South Walnut. Phyllis was one of the hearts of Indiana and one with a pure soul. She was the matriarch of her family, and was active with various activities and singing in the choir through her involvement with Clear Creek Christian Church, a church she had been a member of for many years. She enjoyed sewing, cross-stitching, and crocheting. The greatest passion of Phyllis’ life came with her children, grandchildren, and the newest addition, her great-grandson, Liam. Phyllis is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Carr of Ft. Wayne, Barbara Carpenter of Bloomington, and Anita Clark of Bloomington; grandchildren, Christopher (Jessica) Carr of New Haven, IN, Jordan (Sean) Meehan of Chicago, and Hayley Carr of Bloomington; great-grandson, Liam Carr (Christopher and Jessica), nieces and nephews, Janice McConnell and John Allspaw both of Florida, Lonnie Johnson of Orleans, and Lisa Reynolds of Mitchell; sister-in-law, Mary Alice (Lee) Karr of Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Earl L. Carpenter, brother John (Juanita) Allspaw, sister Doris (Jim) Metzger and son-in-law Daniel Clark. A celebration of Phyllis’ well lived life full of love will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at Clear Creek Christian Church, 530 West Church Lane. Rev. David Lee will officiate. Burial will follow at Clear Creek Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at Allen Funeral Home and Crematory 4155 S. Old State Road 37, Bloomington and again from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Phyllis’ memory to Clear Creek Christian Church, The American Heart Association, or Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
