Stephen "Steve" Ray Raper

Stephen “Steve” Ray Raper, 76, of Bloomington, Indiana, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2026, surrounded by his loving family, at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. Steve was born on June 3, 1950, in Bloomington, Indiana, to the late Kenneth and Wilma (Frye) Raper. A proud veteran, Steve served in the United States Army before dedicating more than 24 years of service to the Perry Clear Creek Fire Department, later known as the Monroe Fire Protection District. During his distinguished career, he rose to the rank of Lieutenant and also served as a Fire Investigator. On his days off, he worked several part-time jobs, including in the emergency room at Bloomington Hospital. His commitment to serving others reflected the kind of man he was—selfless, dependable, and always willing to help those in need. Steve was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosanna “Spook” (Council) Raper, and later by his beloved wife of 22 years, Vickie (Allgood) Raper, their baby girl Trish Janelle Raper; his parents; his sister, Connie Bastin; and his brother, Mark Raper. He is survived by his loving daughter, Anette Allgood; his son-in-law and best friend, Michael Herbst; his cherished grandchildren, his best buddy Lance Allgood (Jenna Kenny), Aaliyah Herbst, and Logan Herbst; his treasured great-grandchildren, Hailey, and twin great-grandsons, Landon and Lucas; and several nieces and nephews. Nothing brought Steve greater joy than his family. He was incredibly proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and they were the light of his life. Steve was known for always wearing a smile and sharing a laugh with everyone he met. He was kind to everyone and had the biggest heart. Whether he was spending time with family, watching NASCAR races, or sharing stories with friends, Steve had a way of making people feel welcome and cared for. Steve’s life was one of service, love, laughter, and compassion. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, former colleagues, and all whose lives were touched by his warmth and generosity. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. A funeral service for Steve will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30th, 2026, at Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington, Indiana. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. until the start of the service. Burial will follow at Clover Hill Cemetery with military honor rites.
